Burials Uncovered at Mellifont Abbey

A number of burials have been exposed and recorded during ongoing excavations by ACS staff at Mellifont Abbey. The burials were exposed below the east ambulatory (the walkway around the open rectangular cloister garth). The burials are aligned east west and are located just outside the door of the chapter house. This position is usually reserved for abbots of the monastery. Many more burials were uncovered in the church during excavations by Liam de Paor in the 1950s. The burials were removed after being recorded and will be examined in detail in order to clarify their age, health and date of burial. They will then be accessioned by the National Museum of Ireland. Further updates on the burials will be posted here as new information becomes available. Excavations at the site are continuing.
