Megaliths in Mayo

ACS have carried out a number of projects in recent months in relation to the management of the country's forests. Works have been carried out in Counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Leitrim to date and have included archaeological management plans for archaeological sites and monuments buried under forest cover, surveys of new features exposed and archaeological monitoring during thinning and clear felling operations. Recent works included the survey of a togher and barrow and the monitoring of tree felling and site clearance on two megalithic court tombs in the beautiful Mayo countryside. Despite having been covered in forest for more than 50 years the two court tombs remained extremely well preserved and the careful removal of the trees has led to their plan and form becoming clearly visible once more. The sites will be maintained into the future and public access paths and signage to the monuments will be put in place.
